The Global UMTS TDD Alliance

The UMTS TDD Standard

Many of the biggest trends in telecommunications and technology point to the need for a ubiquitous, very high speed, low latency, packet based platform to provide broadband and other packet services to users at home, at work, or on the road.

The first platform that meets this need with proven the most real-world traction is the TDD variant of the 3G UMTS standard, UMTS TDD (also known as TD-CDMA). First defined by the 3rd Generation Project Partnership (3GPP) in Release 99, the standard continues to evolve and move forward in the later releases based on input from operators and vendors.

TDD is the best choice for provisioning ubiquitous broadband data and voice services not only because of the unmatched performance and economics of the solution, but its standards-based nature, and the growing market lead of the technology in commercial deployments.

UMTS TDD...
  • is live in commercial networks today
  • is debugged, and working smoothly
  • has excellent spectral efficiency
  • has sensible economics
  • has proven its ability to compete with DSL as a broadband service
  • is a fully mobile broadband service with handoff and roaming

For More Information

The Global UMTS TDD Alliance is created and supported by members of the UMTS TDD community. The Alliance’s goal is to provide a forum for companies that work with UMTS TD-CDMA standard-compliant products and services to share their learnings and set requirements for future solutions.

This website shares information on:
  • The 3GPP's UMTS TDD mobile broadband standard and its evoultion
  • The operators and networks who offer UMTS TDD wireless broadband services
  • News and events relevant to UMTS TDD and mobile broadband
