The Global UMTS TD-CDMA Standard

UMTS TDD is a mobile broadband data standard set by the 3GPP also known as UMTS TD-CDMA. The UMTS TDD standard was born in 1999 as part of the global 3GPP's 3G standard for 3rd Generation (3G) GSM wireless technologies, called UMTS (for Universal Mobile Telecommunications System). The ITU (International Telecommunications Union) sanctioned this IMT-2000 project in 1998 to build these 3G specifications in collaboration with telecommunications associations from Europe (ETSI), Japan (ARIB/TTC), China, South Korea, and North America. The Global UMTS TDD Alliance is proud to be a member of the 3GPP.

Since 1999, the standard has had many improvements (listed below) and much of the UMTS TDD equipment available today already includes elements from the next revision of the standard, called LTE (for Long-Term Evolution).
